Online Chat/Help Software

Lindsey Wilkerson

Hi everyone –

We are looking at adding online chat/help software to our Admissions and Recruitment websites.

Several years ago we used LiveHelpNow! (www.livehelpnow.net) for one year with good results for our online degrees program, but the program director didn’t renew due to budget cutbacks.

We are revisiting the “live chat” question, and while I’m not opposed to returning to LiveHelpNow!, I’d like to know if any other Higher Education institutions have any recommendations or suggestions on chat vendors and services?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions and advice!

LiveChat is another one.  I’ve never used it, but they seem to have an education focus

Lambton College uses Zopim chat (now Zendesk). They charge per month and is fairly reasonable. We use it on multiple areas of our site (full time programs, Interational students section, current students) and Zendesk allows us to set up the various departments as needed.

Setup is as easy as adding a few lines of javascript to your template, however, the widgets they generate are not fully WCAG-compliant.

Another one we’ve seen successfully used in a number of Universities is: www.pubble.io<http://www.pubble.io>

When evaluating these tools, one thing to check out is how they manage “out of hours” – when someone isn’t around to respond. Some of these tools manage this well and others not so well.

Regards,

Piero

We built a tool, so that we could have an unlimited number of operators and pass chats easily through our website. It's available under a BSD open source license.
