Re: Maps - Any cool ones out there???

Andrew Harris-3

Slow replying? Yeah, but I've just launched our refreshed maps site, and I'm pretty happy with it, so I thought I'd share.

It operates quite differently to most others, in that we don't really expect users to come to the site and browse a big layered map for stuff. Instead, our traffic is mostly generated by our search engine (GSA), or by direct URL. We find people put the URL in their email signature, news item, event etc. - of course, searching works, and out search engine has a filter for 'places' which makes it quick and easy to find stuff.

Of possible interest is that we use Mapbox GL JS, which gives us exceptional control over the look of the base layer, quickly renders a crisp vector (WebGL) map on all devices (with fallback for ≤IE10). We can add updates and alterations overnight (Data is from OpenStreetMap), and will soon be introducing walking directions around campus.

Still lots of polishing to do, but it's nice to have the framework in place in time for our open day.

Cheers,

Andrew

Re: Maps - Any cool ones out there???

Andrew Harris-3
No special software, it's just our CMS, Squiz Matrix, and our standard web template. An extra metadata schema has fields for all the map attributes, which just get exposed as required.

I built up a custom map style using mapbox studio (a sweet, web based tool), so that I could reduce clutter, and highlight attributes important to students: public transport, bicycle parking, walking paths, cafes etc.

Cheers,
Andrew

Re: Maps - Any cool ones out there???

Andrew Harris-3

> Anybody have any aesthetically pleasing maps?

Aesthetically pleasing kinda depends on your context.

We find that just under half our map queries (45% of about 50K last week) are from people on mobile devices, presumably on the move, and looking for quick information.

Small file sizes and quick loading (vector tiles), geolocation, walking directions (coming soon!), and a mobile-first template are the 'new aesthetic' for most sites, maps are no different.

Cheers,

Andrew

In reply to this post by Ashish Shivlal Korat

A developer at our University (Barry Richards) has produced a slightly different, but very cool tool for helping people find the place they’re going to…

http://findaroom.southwales.ac.uk/

(My office: http://findaroom.southwales.ac.uk/rooms/trj275a)

Not built on Google Maps & not quite the same as a campus map, but worth a look.

Re: Maps - Any cool ones out there???

Wow, that is really something.

I love that it provides specific information in such a structured way.

The perspective renderings of the buildings are really nice too!

I’d be interested to see some UX studies around this, but I don’t think big ‘campus’ maps are anywhere near as useful as something like this.

The only thing I’d say it needs, is to transition to a live wayfinding tool – geolocation and directions for people on the move.

Going to share that with our web community, I’m pretty sure it’ll stir up some interest!

Cheers,

Andrew

A developer at our University (Barry Richards) has produced a slightly different, but very cool tool for helping people find the place they’re going to…

(My office: http://findaroom.southwales.ac.uk/rooms/trj275a)

Not built on Google Maps & not quite the same as a campus map, but worth a look.

Cheers,
Andrew

Your maps are impressive. What software did you use to build this site?

Thanks much.

Cheers,

Andrew
